Prostheses bra from Institute for Breast Care

Entitled Breast Cancer - The Complete Guide , the 300-page publication explores many topics, including diagnosis, definitions for the different stages of the disease and the most common treatment options.

It also offers statistical information on breast cancer, and lists many national organizations that provide support services for breast cancer patients and their families.

Although breast cancer can have a profound effect on every aspect of a woman's life, there is one component that demands special attention.

"Removal of a cancerous breast can have a devastating impact on a woman's self-image, since breasts are considered symbols of femininity and sexual attractiveness in this society," said Ms. Grammer. "Feelings of physical inadequacy can be as overwhelming as fears about health. We do everything we can to help women get past these emotions, so they can move on and enjoy their lives."

This grant will enable the Institute for Breast Care to help patients achieve this goal by providing mastectomy and lumpectomy patients with a surgical bra, and a temporary prosthesis. In addition, within 24 hours of surgery, each woman also receives a visit from a nurse, who addresses all of her questions and concerns.

After recovering from surgery, women have the option of purchasing specially-fitted permanent mastectomy bras and prostheses at the medical center's Shoppe on Fifth, which caters to the cosmetic needs of patients who have experienced changes in their appearances as a result of cancer treatments.

The Institute for Breast Care will evaluate the effectiveness of the new services by reviewing input from special satisfaction questionnaires that are handed out to each patient.
