Certified post mastectomy bra fitters |
|
August 28, 2003 By: Kathy Cole Certified post mastectomy bra fittersTwo Kewanee Hospital Home Medical Equipment employees, Kathy Smith and Sharon Gustafson, recently completed training to become Certified Mastectomy Fitters (CMF). CMFs share a common goal in helping women receive the best look and fit from their postmastectomy bras and prostheses. They are trained to fit bras and breast prostheses through manufacturer based programs. Their clinical experience, combined with their completion of an approved education program, allows them to apply for certification through nationally recognized programs such as the Board for Orthotists/Prosthetists Certified and the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics, Inc. During CMF training, attendees learn how to match products with surgery types, gain practical hands-on fitting experience, and master key fitting techniques that inspire the customers' confidence. CMF seminars provide training in basic anatomy and prepare the attendee to recognize different types of mastectomy surgeries. Attendees also learn which products compliment each surgery type, how to fit bras correctly, and how to recognize a poor fit. The importance of a correctly fitted bra and prosthesis are explained. Participants have the opportunity to practice on live models and demonstrate their own fitting abilities prior to receiving a certificate of course completion. “This is a service we are proud to offer to our community,” stated Kathy Smith, Kewanee Hospital Home Medical Equipment. “Not all women seeking custom-fittings are mastectomy patients, either. Many women go to certified fitters just to get a bra that fits comfortably and properly. While custom fitted bras are often more costly, it is worth it. A properly fitting bra can truly minimize back problems and make a woman more comfortable.” “We're so fortunate to be able to provide this service locally,” said Sharon Gustafson, also of Home Medical Equipment. “We are the only business in Kewanee to offer this particular service. Until now, patients would have to drive forty or fifty miles to be custom fitted.” About
