This October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, will have a new event to mark the importance of Breast Health Awareness. Gazebo, a full lingerie and post mastectomy shop in downtown Northampton, MA, is home to the Breast Form Fund, which helps uninsured and underinsured women obtain breast prostheses and post mastectomy bras in a dignified manner after breast surgery. The Breast Form Fund will be the recipient of the fundraising event called Show Us Your Bra!, created by Judith Fine, the owner of Gazebo, a lingerie store in downtown Northampton, MA. Show Us Your Bra! is a three part benefit including a contest, gala/auction, and a desk top calendar for 2004 featuring 14 of the prize winning and notable entries. Each single page shows, in vivid color, the humor, wit and clever thought that each Bratiste (artist) devoted to their creation. Monthly facts and reminders about breast health are found at the bottom of each month’s page.

In late September 2001, over 171 bra entries were submitted by 139 artists, men and women, who donated their piece to be judged and entered into the October 6th fund raising gala and silent and live auction at the A.P.E. Gallery in Thorne’s Market, Northampton. More than 350 people attended the event, co-hosted by The Women’s Times, catered by Portobello Catering, with music by the Charles Miller Jazz Trio. Auctioneer George Thomas Lewis lent a professional touch to the live auction, which featured 9 of the bra creations, held or modeled (over black turtlenecks) by volunteers.

The proceeds of the Gala/Auction and forthcoming calendar will go to the Breast Form Fund, managed through Cancer Connection, a 501c3. Cancer Connection offers free support and programs to cancer survivors and their families.

The desk top calendar, in a flip back cd case, will sell for $20., and may be purchased on line at www.showusyourbra.org, or at Gazebo, 14 Center Street, Northampton, MA., and Edward’s Books, Springfield, MA.
